I Woke Up Like This…

Yesterday morning it was raining hard and I woke up at 4 am. I couldn’t go back to sleep so I read the Bible then began to work. I got lost in work for 2 hours which put me behind. On top of everything my hair was “poofy” and giving me problems. I tossed my hair items and makeup in my bag and ran out of the house. I was so far behind that I had to comb Bria’s hair in the school parking lot then told her I needed to get myself together when I got to work. She asked what I meant and I said I needed to comb my hair and put on my makeup. She smiled and said “Mommy, you look beautiful just the way you are and I love your hair. You can rock that”. LOL. In her eyes, I was flawless. I smiled and said “Okay, Mommy just may rock with this today”.

I put on some lip gloss, brushed over my face, shaped my hair with my fingers and went to work. To my surprise, I received more compliments than I could count. Maybe Bria was on to something. I have always told her that she is naturally beautiful and since she was a baby, I’ve sang to her one of my favorites by Prince: ” You must be, the most beautiful girl in the world. It’s plain to see, you’re the reason that God made a girl”.

I posted this message with my picture on Facebook and Instagram and people commented on my beauty within shining on the outside. Even as I stared at my picture, I got lost in my eyes and thought wow….I am wonderfully made by God. Self-talk is a powerful thing. My self-talk said I didn’t look presentable while my daughter and others reminded me of my beauty, inside and out. We must learn to love ourselves, the skin we’re in and our kinky hair (or whatever kind of hair you may have) and love the natural beauty that God has given each one of us. Most times we are stressing over our looks for no reason at all. We must learn to see ourselves as God sees us and master the stories we tell ourselves. We must speak positive affirmations, life, love and health instead of negativity, doubts and insecurities. And once we master the story within, our actions will reflect the same love and positivity. ❤

May God’s peace and grace be with you as you keep pressing forward.

  1. You are BEAUTIFUL!!!!! Inside and out and yes, funny how our insecurities get the best of us and the voices within will point out all the negatives. Know that you are not alone and WE tend to suffer in silence and battle those things all while trying to combat the feelings with a smile. Knowing our God and walking with him is our greatest comfort and stronghold on those negative thoughts and feelings. Continue to step into each day loving your body and your beauty because YOU are most certainly BEAUTIFUL…fearfully and wonderfully made by our father!!!!

  2. I love it. This can help one who is going through a struggle of self and beauty. There are time when you look around and wonder why I had to be the dark child. Why my hair is not long and I didnt have the good hair like my siblings. God had a reason to make you just like he did and you have to find that purpose. Keep on speaking your word and help other to shine through you.

  3. Tameka, I love this blog. Sometimes we have to be reminded and continue to know that God made us just the way we are. Society tries to paint a different picture for us but God always encourages us in so many ways… Within who we are, after all we’ve gone through… we survived, we passed the test.. We dont look anything like what we been through! Beauty is her name! Keep Glowing! I love you! 😘😘😘
